Description: The Society of Actuaries, the SOA Pension Section, the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and the American Society of Pension Actuaries are contributing funds in support of efforts to get the actuarial profession more involved in modeling that addresses national retirement income policy and health care reform. The first project will be a feasibility study to analyze each major existing database/model and investigate whether it would be practical to access it or to extend it into a new macrodemographic model.

Some of the more significant issues are: Declining numbers of defined benefit plans, plan underfunding and the PBGC, increased regulatory complexity and compliance, and increased competition and employment opportunities.

Description: This article summarizes the Retirement Systems Practice Area Advanced Technology Working Group Report. Formed to project developments in technology and their applications, the Advanced Technology Working Group’s goal was to improve all aspects of Society of Actuaries services for its members in the retirement systems practice area. Although the emphasis was on pension actuaries, many ideas are equally applicable to other areas.

Description: This article announces a new research project, co-sponsored by a number of actuarial organizations, to evaluate macrodemographic and microsimulation models that could be used to analyze retirement and other public policy proposals.
